Over 200 residents in communities throughout the southeastern region of Clarendon will soon have their houses wired under the Rural Electrification Programme (REP), managed by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).
This information was disclosed during a recent tour of the communities by Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Daryl Vaz. The benefiting communities include Woodside, Corn Hill, Piece River, and Unity Heights.
Vaz said that the project will be executed in two phases, beginning early next year in Unity Heights, where 40 houses will be wired over a period of approximately eight weeks. The remaining communities will be prioritised for budgeting next year.
Vaz encouraged residents to take advantage of this provision, which offers a grant of over $100,000 per household.
"You cannot have that payment being spent and not sign up to connect while continuing with illegal connections," Vaz stressed.
Pearnel Charles Jr, Member of Parliament for the area, stated that a "comprehensive evaluation" has been conducted on these communities as "electrification is fundamental to improving residents' lives."
The REP aims to expand electricity access in rural Jamaica as part of the government's commitment to providing electricity for the entire island and stimulating economic and social activities.
